Last month, we received our six monthly progress report from Santosh, who manages our project working with children of Brick Kiln labourers. Here are some highlights from his report:
Supporting parents to engage with education
The parents involved in the programme come from tribal communities with large families and low daily-wages. The project has worked with 110 parents to engage them in issues affecting their children and since April has run sessions on various topics including: the improtance of education; how the world works with modern technology; how schools work; how to discuss progress with teachers. This has led to an increase in their involvement in their children's education, with 85 visiting the school monthly to ask about their children's progress
Working with the parents of under 6's
The 'Potali' part of the proejct supports parents to better care for their children through teaching them hygiene, games and how to engage with a child to help with their development. Over the past six months, the project has trained 105 parents in the Potali approach, with 75 of them now carrying this out regularly. The young children engaged in this project particularly enjoy saying poems with actions and expressing their views.
Educating the under 6's
The project has a non-formal 'demo centre' where 106 children have been coming to learn over the past six motnhs. Among many activities, the children have learnt to speak basic phrases in Marathi and can tell the voices of birds and animals! The children are also able to count 1 to 10. They are also learning basic english phrases.
Working with school aged children
135 students are now enrolled in Zilla parishad schools and are engaged in formal learning. They have enjoyed learning about Indian history, writing stories (in English and Marathi) and basic maths.
Ensuring girls continue with their education
The project has worked with 35 girls to ensure that they continue their education beyond 7th standard. We are delighted that 34 of these girls took part in the SCC examinations after completing 10th standard this year. We have also worked with their parents to encourage them to support their girls to learn and 12 are now going outside of the village for classes.
