Helping Bahamian NGOs to Collaborate

By Matthew Aubry | Executive Director

Strengthening collaboration among local NPOs for focused citizen participation and responsive policy development.

Over the past 7 months, with support from donors using the GlobalGiving platform,  the ORG Bahamas Foundation launched a targeted initiative to enhance collaboration among Not-for-Profit Organizations (NPOs) in The Bahamas. The project aimed to harness the transformative potential of NPOs, creating a more interconnected and strategically aligned network.

Drawing inspiration from global best practices, the project emphasized the need for cluster approaches, especially during crises. The Bahamas, having faced challenges like Hurricane Dorian and the COVID-19 pandemic, showcased the vital role of local CSOs. The project identified opportunities for partnerships and knowledge transfer between international NGOs and local NPOs.

With over 1000 registered Not for Profit Organizations, mostly The Bahamas faces challenges of loosely organized sectors with 71% having minimal staff. Significant disruptions due to COVID-19 and Hurricane Dorian highlighted financial needs, regulatory issues, and operational challenges. However, these challenges also presented opportunities for strategic collaborations.

Over eight months, ORG engaged 109 NPO leaders through virtual and in-person discussion/training sessions. Covering essential topics, including Leadership, Fundraising, Communications, Advocacy, and Financial Management. The sessions empowered NPOs with knowledge and tools for effective collaboration within thematic clusters.

The training sessions equipped NPO leaders with essential skills, fostering a more collaborative approach. By establishing strategic clusters, NPOs can be better positioned to address local needs effectively, ranging from social and humanitarian to cultural and economic challenges like climate change adaptation, gender equity and disaster preparedness. The project anticipates a more robust and engaged NPO network, enhancing access to funds and resources.

The project not only met the immediate need for skill-building but also laid the groundwork for a more connected and prepared NPO network in The Bahamas. Increased collaboration among NPOs is set to create a more impactful and responsive civil society, contributing significantly to the sustainable development of the nation.
