AdvocAid continues its commitment to strengthening Sierra Leone’s legal base through the Frances Claudia Wright (FCW) Scholarship, launched in 2022. Recognising that money is a major obstacle for women seeking to advance through higher education, this year, we supported two female law students to complete the required professional training necessary to qualify as legal practitioners. This initiative is a critical investment in cultivating the next generation of feminist lawyers who will champion gender justice for women and girls and contribute to our overall vision of a more gender-respnosive justice sysytem.
Sierra Leone’s legal landscape still faces significant gender inequalities, with women and girls disproportionately affected by systemic barriers to justice. Feminist lawyers play an essential role in addressing these disparities by advocating for legal reform, holding the state accountable, and providing essential legal representation to marginalised communities.
AdvocAid is proud to support future leaders like Jennifer and Rejoice, whose personal journeys reflect their deep commitment to advancing gender justice.
Jennifer’s story reflects the personal and professional passion that drives her work:
"I grew up witnessing inequalities that shaped how society treated women and men differently. I saw these disparities firsthand when I went to the police station as a victim of sexual assault. Instead of finding justice, I was confronted with bias and shame. That experience left me feeling powerless but also ignited a determination to use the law to fight for women like me, who often feel voiceless.
As an intersectional feminist, I believe in breaking down traditional gender roles and challenging the norms that hold women back. My interaction within the feminist space has taught me the importance of advocacy and systemic change and being aware that there is so much work to do. This scholarship allows me to deepen my knowledge, build my confidence, and contribute meaningfully to creating a justice system that works for all women.”
Similarly, Rejoice brings a powerful vision for redefining the roles of women in society:
"I believe in a just and equitable world where women have the same opportunities as men. My passion for feminist advocacy stems from my desire to challenge traditional gender roles and redefine what it means to be a woman in Sierra Leone.
During my internship with AdvocAid, I was able to build my skills in conducting legal research. This gave me the opportunity to see how the law can be used as a tool to empower women. I’m excited to continue this journey, to learn more, and to use the law as a means to create lasting change for women and girls in my community. This scholarship gives me the chance to strengthen my advocacy efforts and ensure that I can make a meaningful impact."
The FCW Scholarship not only alleviates financial barriers but also provides mentorship opportunities, fostering a supportive community where recipients like Jennifer and Rejoice can thrive. Both scholars are committed to working with AdvocAid for a year after completing their studies- to contribute directly to our mission of advancing gender justice.
With continued support from GlobalGiving and our donors, AdvocAid hopes to expand this initiative, reaching more aspiring feminist lawyers and creating lasting change for women and girls in Sierra Leone.
Thank you for believing in and supporting our mission.
