CUFA commenced this year’s Children’s Financial Literacy (CFL) activities at Coronation Primary School, Port Moresby, in August, with a strong focus on preparing and supporting our volunteer cohort - central to delivering financial literacy education.
From 18-21 August, our six new local volunteers undertook a four-day induction program covering child protection and safeguarding, monitoring and evaluation, facilitation techniques, disability inclusion, and peer practice. This training ensured they were well-equipped to deliver content confidently, uphold CUFA’s values, and create safe and inclusive learning environments. Volunteers also completed pre- and post-training surveys to reflect on their learning and provide feedback.
On 25 August, CUFA hosted a Teacher Workshop refresher at Coronation Primary to align staff on CFL content for Grades 6-8. Teachers explored student-centred approaches, shared expectations for sustaining financial literacy beyond CUFA’s direct support, and participated in surveys, focus groups, and interviews to help shape ongoing program design.
School-based training began on 27-28 August with Grade 7 students. Volunteers facilitated the first two CFL sessions on savings goals and budgeting and supported students to complete pre-surveys capturing baseline financial literacy knowledge.
To strengthen learning and accountability, volunteers are completing a Weekly Journal after each session. This tool records student participation, behaviour, and application of financial literacy concepts. Volunteers also reflect on challenges faced and how they addressed them, creating opportunities for peer learning, mentoring, and continuous improvement.
While many of our volunteers are new to facilitation, their enthusiasm and teamwork are clear. With CUFA’s guidance and their own shared reflections, they are building confidence, adapting to large classrooms, and ensuring children engage meaningfully with financial literacy concepts. Their commitment is already proving the foundation of CFL’s success this term.
