Santa Madre Homeless Shelter has been serving the community for more than 10 years. The main mission is to provide a safe and secure roof for girls, boys, single mothers and homeless people, so they can have a place to stay the night; as well as giving food, clothes, health care, psychological aid and other services.
Some of the people at the Santa Madre Homeless Shelter, have problems with drugs or alcohol, due to this problems we had trained our staff to help them and guide those people to integrate them into society.
As part of the community services, we also provide a safe roof to the National Police Officer, and Army Soldiers, students from other departments and is ready to work as a Shelter for victims of Natural Disasters, as the Volcano Eruption in June 3rd, 2018.
Around 2:00 pm the Fuego Volcano erupted and a lot of families were trapped and buried in the lava. Some of them were able to escape but the majority lost their belongings. Immediately, that day Asociación Nuestros Ahijados de Guatemala, ONG; enable the Homeless Shelter to receive 75 people that didn’t have where to stay, without food and were very emotionally affected.
Currently, the Santa Madre Homeless Shelter is providing a decent living to 63 people and it’s because the support of Guatemalan and International Volunteers that their needs are covered. They are living in a dignify place; we are providing psychological aid every day; children are attending school in Asociación Nuestros Ahijados and parents are receiving formation through different kind of workshops.
Our mission is to find a land for those families and help them with a home building. Also, to provide the necessary tools so they can start with a new life and to overcome from this natural disaster. The families are very thankful for all the support received from Santa Madre Homeless Shelter; they know that without this help they have no idea of where they could be living in this moment.
