What if a small packet of seeds was one of the only factors holding you back from being able to place a balanced meal on your family's table? Well, that is the daily reality for some rural households in Mozambique. Each gift will help a family to start growing their own fresh and nutritious vegetables for them to eat daily, for most of the year. Our goal is to help support 200 families in this effort over the next 6 months.
For a family in rural Mozambique with their own land, labor, basic equipment, and the motivation to work, the lack of quality seeds means their ability to grow their own food remains limited. This results in a poorly balanced diet, often lacking essential nutrients from vegetables, which can lead to malnutrition and hinder the healthy growth and development of their children.
Each gift will be used to buy quality seeds for a family to plant vegetables in their backyard garden. These fresh and nutritious vegetables will be eaten as part of the family's daily meals. To ensure consistent supply, the family will space their planting so that harvests are staggered and hence fresh vegetables are available for most of the year.
The project will improve food and nutrition security for a total of 1,000 people in the community, who are household members of the participating 200 families. Any surplus vegetables that will be grown will be sold so that families can generate additional income. This will also empower them to be able to afford ongoing household expenses, including vital investments like school fees, thereby providing their children with a chance at a better future.
