School out- are the children safe?

By patricia wilkins | executive director

As schools close their doors for the long break, one question looms large for many families in underserved communities: Are the children safe?

For children supported by BASICS International, the answer is becoming clearer with every passing day: Yes—but only because of you.

Thanks to your continued support, BASICS International is not only keeping children safe when school is out, but we are also preparing them for a brighter future.

Aklowah: A Safe Haven in Progress

Construction continues on Camp Aklowah, a transformative space where children and youth can grow, learn, and dream beyond the classroom. Located just outside Accra, the camp sits on over 8 acres of land and is quickly taking shape.

Here's what we've accomplished so far:

  • Roofed and framed: 2 major buildings

  • Completed: 3 community “palava” huts and a large washroom block

  • Installed: Water lines and solar power connections

  • In progress: Dormitories, dining area, and activity zones

Once completed, Camp Aklowah will be a year-round retreat offering mentorship, digital training, wellness, and leadership programs for youth—particularly during school breaks when children are most vulnerable.

Celebrating New Graduates

While many students are beginning their long vacation, others are celebrating major milestones. This year, 13 students graduated from Junior High School, many of whom will now continue on to Senior High School. Several of our university-level students also completed another year toward their degrees in Education, Engineering, and Public Health.

These successes would not be possible without your belief in their potential. One proud parent told us:

“Without BASICS, my son would never have made it this far. Now he’s the first in our family to go to Senior High School.”

What's Next?

Over the next few months, your support will help us:

  • Launch Vacation Learning Programs including STEAM education and sports

  • Provide daily meals to children during the school break

  • Expand our Chorkor Digital Lab curriculum

  • Continue building safe, enriching spaces like Camp Aklowah

We’re also preparing to check 35 students into boarding school this September—an achievement that means safety, consistency, and dignity for children who once had none.

From All of Us at BASICS: Thank You

Your impact is not just felt in the classroom. It’s felt in every safe space, every plate of food, and every empowered child who dares to dream because you gave them the chance.

School’s out. But because of you, safety is in.
