Strengthening Our Camp: Thank You for Your Support

By Stephanie Kong | Project Manager, Elephants for Africa

Dear GlobalGiving Community,

We are immensely grateful for your generous support, helping us fortify our research camp after a challenging rainy season. Powerful storms battered our camp, damaging tents and posing safety risks to our team. Thankfully, no injuries occurred, although our CEO and Founder, Dr Kate Evans, was rather shocked to find herself trapped in her tent when it collapsed on her under the weight of the rain. Thankfully other team members were able to come to the rainy rescue! With multiple tents damaged beyond repair, their replacement became urgent and took priority.

Unfortunately, the storms were short lived, and we now face another severe drought with continuous heatwaves. The zebra migration that usually arrives in May has arrived in February; and we are seeing increased elephants in and around our camp. With so many early hungry mouths, the landscape looks bleaker than usual at this time of year.

Thanks to your donations, we've addressed immediate safety concerns by initiating repairs to our damaged facilities and ensuring everyone has somewhere to sleep! Now, we're focusing on raising funds for significant structural enhancements and a much-needed comprehensive camp revamp, including installing the storage unit, which has been purchased and is ready for installation. We have learned that a large labor force, a crane, and other heavy machinery will be required to safely position the container. Given our remote location, it makes the most logistical and economic sense to address all building projects at once, which will also include securing our sewage system, stopping our kitchen and current storage from shifting in the sand, replacing the termite-eaten office, and repairing decks so they are structurally sound. With so many desperate repairs needed, we are working hard to raise funds to make that a reality.

These improvements are vital a safer and more conducive environment for our team to continue their essential work. Your support ensures that we can effectively maintain our commitment to serving the communities and wildlife in our region. We are deeply grateful for your ongoing support and look forward to sharing our progress with you as we strive to create lasting change. Please consider sharing this campaign to help us reach our goals.

With many thanks and appreciation,
The Elephants for Africa team
