Dear Friends,
Recently, Asia America Initiative sponsored a healing party to introduce new volunteers to help make the day special for the children receiving cancer treatment at the House of Hope in Davao, Philippines. It is the only Cancer Treatment center in the southern Philippines that cares for hundreds of children who live in the surrounding rural areas. These children, who are the offspring of landless farm workers, have been subjected to herbicides and pesticides resulting in never-before-seen tumors and rare diseases. This event opened the season of hope and healing for these special children and their families.
"The Children's parties are always a big hit," says our coordinator, Miss Patmei. "During our August party, children shared a meal of fish and veggies, and we provided gifts of coloring books, crayons, school supplies, and a stuffed toy to have while they are undergoing treatment at House of Hope."
AAI and the One World Institute's experienced staff welcomed new volunteers for the party. Along with the House of Hope staff, the kids were treated to a day of happiness. This included songs and dances with their parents and other family members. AAI staff served snacks, and presented surprise gifts of toys, books, and assists with playtime for the group. It is meaningful to "just be a child for a day" and feel the friendship and hear the laughter of other children.
Our professional partners provide oncology medication free of charge to children fighting cancer. AAI complements their mission by providing nutritional and educational support. We try to instill a sense of happiness through our toy giving. This is especially important for young children who need care and to be loved In addition, older children and teenagers benefit from our related art programs. Often, these children whose parents are indigent farm laborers, have never had a toy of their own. The cuddly stuffed animals become a touchstone of support as they go through their medical treatments.
