2024 Vision: Helping Women Rise in Panama

By Ma. Belen Montoto | Executive Director

As we forge ahead into 2024, Fundación Calicanto remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering the most vulnerable women across Panama. Our mission is to foster a world where every woman, regardless of her background, has the opportunity to thrive. As we step into 2024, we are excited to share three of our strategic initiatives aimed at expanding our reach and enhancing the quality of our programs.

Transforming Digital Learning for Our Beneficiaries

Our e-learning platform is undergoing a comprehensive content renovation to ensure our beneficiaries have access to the latest educational topics, tailored to their needs. This includes comprehensive training focusing on self-esteem, effective communication, vocational skills, and entrepreneurial abilities, all designed to empower women towards achieving their personal and professional goals.

Community Mapping Initiative

We've developed a Community Mapping Manual tailored specifically to the urban and rural landscapes of Panama. This manual introduces an updated process that incorporates digitalization tools, designed to be adaptable to various communities. Recognizing that no two communities are alike, this initiative serves as the foundational step in our engagement with each area we approach.

Our community mapping initiative is driven by two core objectives: firstly, to gain a deep understanding of the unique needs and challenges within each community, allowing us to tailor our programs for maximum effectiveness. Secondly, we strive to equip women with the knowledge and tools to uncover and seize opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship right in their own neighborhoods.

This approach ensures that our interventions are not only relevant but also deeply impactful, addressing the unique challenges and leveraging the distinct opportunities present in each community.

Targeted Geographical Expansion

This year, we're focusing our expansion on two critical areas: Colón and Panamá Oeste. Colón, accounting for 12% of Panama's unemployment, and Panamá Oeste, with the highest unemployment rate at 12%—disproportionately affecting women at 16%—are our primary targets. These regions are not only facing significant unemployment challenges but also host a growing number of migrant women, making them pivotal areas for our intervention. By stepping into these communities, we aim to directly address the urgent needs of women, both local and migrant, facing the brunt of unemployment.

With our programs, we aim is to build an inclusive space where all women can access support and opportunities, while we foster proper and healthy integration of migrant participants.

As we embark on these ambitious projects, we invite our community of donors, volunteers, and partners to join us in this transformative journey. Your support is the cornerstone of our mission, enabling us to guide vulnerable women in Panama as they chase their dreams with conviction and grace. It is through our collective efforts that these women will not only envision a brighter future for themselves but also become pivotal contributors to the flourishing of their communities. Join us, as we weave a tapestry of resilience, opportunity, and growth, crafting a legacy of prosperity that will echo through generations.
