Students Give Back, Inspired by YOU!

Happy to receive study materials!
Happy to receive study materials!

Every year, Lotus Outreach Cambodia (LOCAM) organizes a transformative study visit for our CATALYST scholars, aimed at broadening their horizons and enriching their understanding of the world beyond their communities. This year, our excursion took place in Mondulkiri Province, with 66 participants, including current and former CATALYST scholars along with our dedicated staff members.

The study visit was designed not only to expose our scholars to different environments but also to foster teamwork and personal growth. Throughout the trip, we incorporated team-building activities and a special "Giving Back Day" to reinforce values of compassion and community service.

One of the highlights of the annual trip is the opportunity for students to take on leadership roles, actively contributing to organizing the visit and leading team-building exercises. It was truly inspiring for LOCAM team members to witness the growth and development of our scholars throughout this experience.

During their time in Mondulkiri, students learned invaluable lessons in empathy and collaboration. They discovered the importance of mutual support, respect, and effective communication. The trip facilitated the nurturing of relationships between senior and junior students, enhancing solidarity and cohesion within our CATALYST community.

The pinnacle of our visit was the 5th Giving Back Day, a cherished tradition where students express gratitude for the scholarship support they receive by giving back to underprivileged communities. Despite initially budgeting $550, our dedicated scholars surpassed all expectations by raising an impressive $1,313.75 through their enthusiasm and the generous contributions of alumni and supporters.

On February 5, 2024, our CATALYST scholars exemplified the spirit of generosity by providing essential study materials, backpacks, and other necessities to 81 students, including 55 Phnorng indigenous students, at Bu Rang Elementary School in Purang Village, Sen Monorom Commune, Oraing District, Mondulkiri Province. In addition to educational materials, our students distributed items like pen bags, soaps, yogurt, and snacks, enhancing the impact of their outreach.

While some scholars prepared materials for distribution, others engaged younger students in playful and educational activities, fostering an environment conducive to learning and growth.

The Giving Back Project not only empowers our scholars to give back to their communities but also instills in them the values of compassion and social responsibility. It serves as a heartfelt "thank you" to all our donors and supporters who believe in the transformative power of education and empowerment.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who contributes to Lotus Outreach Cambodia, enabling experiences like these that shape our scholars' lives and aspirations. Through your support, our students are not only breaking the cycle of poverty in their families but also becoming advocates for positive change in society.

Reflections from Students on the Mondulkiri Study Visit and Giving Back Day

T. Hon shared, "I felt immense joy and pride in being able to contribute to society, especially by helping underprivileged kids who reminded me of my own past experiences. Witnessing the remote living conditions opened my eyes to the challenges faced by these communities. I was truly moved by the resilience of the indigenous people living in such isolated areas. Their determination to educate their children despite the odds is truly admirable."

V. Savy reflected, "The Giving Back Day created unforgettable memories for me. Seeing the smiles on the kids' faces as they received study materials filled me with joy and reminded me of my own childhood experiences. It was a deeply rewarding experience."

S. Thoan expressed, "I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to give back to society and witness firsthand the challenges faced by remote communities. This experience has taught me the importance of perseverance and resilience, and I was touched by the genuine appreciation shown by the teachers for our contributions."

P. Sok shared, "Leading fundraising efforts was empowering for me. Reflecting on how receiving study materials in my childhood shaped my educational journey filled me with gratitude. Overcoming obstacles together reinforced the importance of teamwork and leadership. This experience provided valuable insights into local livelihoods."

These quotes encapsulate the heartfelt emotions and transformative experiences of our students during the Mondulkiri study visit and Giving Back Day, showcasing their commitment to making a positive impact in the world.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all our donors whose generosity has fueled the success of our CATALYST program. Your support has empowered our scholars to thrive and make a positive impact in their communities. However, we are currently facing a slowdown in funding, putting our ability to support all these girls at risk. We urgently appeal to our donors to consider making a contribution or increasing their support during this critical time.

Together, we can ensure that every girl has the opportunity to receive the education and resources she deserves. Your generosity will make a profound difference in shaping the future of these young lives. Thank you for your continued commitment to empowering girls through education.
