Beyond the Playground: Building Life Skills Through Sports
At Tiljala SHED, we believe that sports are about much more than physical fitness, competition, or winning medals. For children growing up in vulnerable communities, the playground is a place where they learn some of life's most important lessons — confidence, teamwork, discipline, resilience, respect, and perseverance.
Every weekend, children from our centres participate in sports and games in nearby parks and open spaces. These regular sessions provide a safe and joyful environment where children can be active, build friendships, and learn through play.
Through sports, children learn to work as a team, follow rules, communicate with others, take responsibility, respect their teammates and opponents, and accept both success and disappointment. Most importantly, they learn to keep trying when something does not go their way.
For a child who may often face difficult circumstances, even a simple game can become a powerful experience. A shy child may find the confidence to participate. A child who loses a race learns to try again. Another learns to encourage a teammate rather than give up. These small moments gradually build self-belief and resilience that extend beyond the playground and into school, family, and everyday life.
Our Annual Sports Day is a special celebration of these values. Earlier this year, more than 600 children participated in 65 sporting events, creating a day filled with excitement, encouragement, and pride. While the Annual Sports Day brings everyone together for a memorable celebration, the learning and development continue throughout the year through our regular weekend sports activities.
Every child deserves a chance to run, to play, to try, to fall, to get back up—and to hear someone cheer them on.
With your support, we can continue creating opportunities where children not only play, but learn, belong, build confidence, and discover that they are capable of much more than they imagined.
