1. Introduction
In the reporting month, Save a Life conducted various activities to support differently abled individuals in the Jaffna District. Our primary focus was on enhancing their quality of life through aid and recognition of their needs. To mark International Children's Day and International Differently abled day, we organized a special cultural event for differently abled children with the collaboration of Karaveddy Social Service Centre, and in addition, we supported families in Kayts and Velanai divisions with essential sanitary products.
2. Key Activities Cultural Program for Differently Abled Children:
As part of International Children’s Day and Differently abled Day celebrations, we conducted a cultural event dedicated to differently abled children in the Jaffna District. During this program, we distributed hot water flasks to 25 children in Jaffna District, ensuring they have access to warm water for health and daily use. This event provided a joyful and inclusive atmosphere, recognizing the unique talents and challenges of these children.
In response to the needs of the differently abled community in Kayts and Velanai, we distributed pampers and sanitary pads to help families meet their daily hygiene needs. These supplies are crucial for maintaining dignity and health, particularly for those with limited mobility or access to such resources.
We extended our assistance to a differently abled youth suffering from spinal cord issues and unable to walk. Based on a request from the Social Service Officer in Jaffna, we began providing pampers to this individual, as he requires frequent changes every four hours. This support has significantly eased the financial burden on his family, ensuring his basic care needs are met.
In a new initiative, we organized a yoga workshop for differently abled schoolgirls at Nafield School in Jaffna. The workshop focused on helping students manage menstrual pain through simple, accessible yoga techniques. This holistic approach aims to improve the physical and mental well-being of the students, giving them a natural way to cope with menstrual discomfort.
3. Challenges Faced
One challenge we faced was coordinating the distribution of supplies to remote areas in Kayts and Velanai, as transportation and communication with some families posed difficulties. We are working with local community leaders to improve these logistics for future distributions.
Providing regular supplies, such as pampers for the differently abled youth, is financially demanding for his family. We are exploring long-term solutions to ensure continued support, including partnerships with local organizations and additional funding avenues.
4. Impact on the Community
The distribution of essential supplies has brought immediate relief to the families of differently abled individuals. In particular, the hot water flasks and hygiene products have addressed practical needs, while also showing the community that their challenges are being recognized and supported.
For the differently abled youth with spinal cord problems, the provision of pampers has reduced the strain on his family. This ongoing support, recommended by the Social Service Officer, has ensured his comfort and allowed his family to focus on other care responsibilities.
