Summer Vacations in Our Children's Homes

By Julia Matthew | Managing Director

Summer vacations are the perfect time to relax and enjoy yourself with others. Due to the spread of coronavirus, the school shut down from 15th March 2020. As a result, the vacation started much before the expected date. All the children were so happy. Due to the sudden lockdown, the exam was canceled and this news made them happier. But for the children's learning never stopped. like the home In-charges and care-takers are taking two hours of classes every day according to the syllabus sent by the respective class teachers.

Every second week of the month we celebrate birthdays of the children with gifts, cakes are cut, sing-song, and prayers are been made for them led by staff. During the month of Feb-March, 7 boys and 6 girls celebrated their birthday.

Very often we invite motivational speakers to come and spend some time with our children and encourage them to come up in life. On 8th February, a student from St. Xavier's college conducted a session of self-healing for the children. In this session, she taught the girls how to release stress and come out of depression. and on 15th February, A visitor along with her colleagues conducted a workshop on team building, unity, and communication. Through this workshop, the children learned that though the task may be difficult through unity and proper communication, the task can be completed in a short period of time. we also had a staff of Tata institution who spoke about the uniqueness of every individual person. this has helped our children a lot. they have learned to accept themselves.

Along with their daily activities the boys too participated in the following events.

  • The under-14 boys participated in the football tournament organized by the Goa
    Football Association.
  • The boy’s cricket team played against the ESCT staff.
  • They also participated in the Under-Privilege Inter School meet at St. Joseph School and it's our pleasure to highlight the achievements of our children.
  • State Level Boxing
  • Akash Gaunder Won Brown Medal at All Goa Boxing Match at the state level
  • Prajwal won Silver Medal at All Goa Boxing Match at the state level
  • Raj Kumar Singh received Championship Certificate and is selected for the FC Goa Football.

On 17th February, all the staff and children went for Holi party at Shekinah House ( one of our children's homes) sponsored by one of our supporters. all the children enjoyed themselves playing with colors, followed by snacks and dinner. On 28th February, the Italian team sponsored a dinner party for the children. The team organized some fun games for the children followed by dance and dinner.

For the safety of the children, the children could not go for any outings nor did we allow any visitors to come and spend time with the children. Therefore the staff of the respective homes had organized a summer camp for the children at their respective homes on the theme " character building". during the proceedings of the camp, we educated the children with different topics on character building with games and other events related to the topic for participation and presentation as a group. The children are put into groups consisting of 10-12 members each in their respective homes. Activities and competition are been conducted within groups such as football, cricket, basketball, chess, carom, GK on current affairs, extempore speech, skits, talent shows, team building, best out of waste, singing, storytelling, and discipline, drawing competition based on coronavirus, etc.

* Conducted a game of eating biscuits slowly sliding down the forehead by listening to the instructions of the leader.

* Conducted the activity on arranging the words and forming it into meaningful sentences. through this, they learned to join the words to form them into sentences.

* Conducted activity of stamping the cartoon box pieces to reach the endpoint. through this activity, the children learned to focus on the goal that they have set.

* Children participated in different activities like song, dance, and skits which enable them to know their talents.

* Cricket coach  from England trained the children in playing cricket and so on

Besides the summer activities, the children were engaged in many other self-development activities such as learning to cook food which also helped to feed poor migrants and daily wage workers. They were also involved in gardening to grow our own vegetables since there was limited supply due to lockdown. This also helped El Shaddai youths to learn gardening, at the same time our young girls are learning to make a mask for the younger ones.

Since children were feeling that nobody from outside was interacting with them, so we came up with an idea to go live on Facebook so that they could interact with their sponsors and it went really well.

We had a few volunteers who conducted online dance teaching for the younger girls.

It is because of many wonderful donors and supporters that El Shaddai has been able to provide for and help children with education. It is truly a blessing to know that there are so many people who care about children and are willing to help. All the children are truly grateful for your continued support. We look forward to your continuous support and love from your side
