keeping child in learning

By Joyce Arono | Project Leader

With majority of Ugandans living in poverty  with the COVID - 19 pandemic and without funding for schooling, the education system is struggling, teachers are unpaid and the drop-out rates are high as children leave school to work. ECD is even less of a priority in communities as people are unaware of the important role it plays in a child's development and only recently has the government put emphasis on schools including it in their curriculum, but with no funding, this is almost impossible.

In the long run we hope to improve ECD education in Uganda especially in the community of Bukedea by training teachers so that they are fully aware of the importance of ECD, provide necessary resources as well as assist in funding local preschools that children from all areas can access ad costruction fo the centre. $20 will supply 20 of the necessary books for ECD for a local school.

The construction of our new ECD center started late this year but was temporally halted due to government restrictions in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

As a result of the COVID-19 restrictions, unemployment in our community exceeded 60%.  In order to support our community in these trying times we tried to hire as many local people as possible to work on the construction of the ECD center.  This project provided more than 70 part-time construction and site preparation jobs to single mothers and youth living in Uganda, providing them with the resources to purchase medical insurance, buy food and pay utilities.

Despite the temporary setback due to COVID-19, we already laid the bricks for the building foundation and are in the process of cleaning the site and getting more materials on the site.

Thanks to the generous past and future investment in this project by our donors through GlobalGiving we will be able to complete construction of the Center, hire staff and purchase needed supplies allowing us to educate children below five years of age so they can thrive and reach their boundless potential.

Thank you for your support adn stay safe
