Thank you for donating to Save the Children's Child Refugee Crisis fund! Here is an update on some of our work, which is only possible due to supporters like you:

August 25, 2024, marks seven years since more than 700,000 Rohingya refugees fled violence in Myanmar to seek safety in Bangladesh. In Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, the humanitarian response has saved lives and provided protection and basic services for the Rohingya refugee community. However, seven years on, conditions are getting worse for more than 500,000 Rohingya refugee children who remain in protracted displacement.

The humanitarian situation is reaching a breaking point. For seven years, Rohingya refugee children have gone without formal education, parents and caregivers have gone without employment, and all refugees have become more vulnerable to deaths and injuries from large-scale fires, flooding, and rising violence and insecurity in the camps than ever before.

The Crisis In Numbers

  • Cox’s Bazar is home to the largest refugee settlement in the world, with almost 1 million Rohingya refugees, most of whom have now been living in the camps for seven years. There are 1.6 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in Cox’s Bazar.

  •  Approximately 514,000 Rohingya refugees in camps in Bangladesh are children, which is 52% of the entire camp population.

  •  More than 900,000 Rohingya refugees are dependent on food aid from humanitarian organisations.

  • This year, over 300,000 children have enrolled in education programmes at learning centres in the camps. Education for Rohingya refugee children remains a challenge as education is not formally accredited, and accommodating more vulnerable students, such as girls and children with disabilities, is difficult in the camp environment. Accreditation and more flexible learning environments is needed to increase to ensure education is accessible for all Rohingya children.

Save the Children's Response

  • Save the Children is one of the leading International NGOs working in Cox’s Bazar and has been there since 2012. It has reached about 600,000 Rohingya refugees, including more than 320,000 children, since the response began in 2017.
  • Save the Children has a workforce of 354 staff and 339 volunteers supporting programs in child protection, access to education, health and nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene services, as well as distribution of shelter and non-food items. We work in 27 out of 33 Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.
