Project Description
The Aladina Foundation is pioneering the first international study to evaluate the impact of Mediterranean nutrition on the side effects of oncological treatments and survival rates in pediatric cancer patients. The EPICKids project is designed to create informative guides that utilize objective data and essential nutritional parameters to assist medical teams in monitoring the nutritional status of children and adolescents in Southern Europe diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and certain brain tumors.
This groundbreaking research involves prestigious partners such as Columbia University's Irving Medical Center and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is part of the World Health Organization (WHO). Participating hospitals include Niño Jesús and La Paz in Madrid, Sant Joan de Déu and Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, Virgen del Rocío in Sevilla, as well as Italy's Fondazione Monza e Brianza and Fondazione IRCCS, and Aghia Sofia Hospital in Athens.
Project Impact
The EPICKids research project is currently in its initial data collection phase. Consequently, it is premature to share extrapolatable preliminary results at this time. Nevertheless, the prospective impact of this research on understanding and enhancing the nutritional management of pediatric oncology patients is immense.
Challenges and Solutions
The primary challenge for the EPICKids project lies in its early stages, as we await the accumulation of robust data to analyze and interpret. The initial phase of any comprehensive research project is critical and demands rigorous attention to the quality and processes of data collection.
Future Steps
The EPICKids study is a long-term, multi-national initiative. We will persist in advancing this research, strictly adhering to our protocols and sustaining collaboration across our network of international hospitals and research institutions. Our goal is to generate actionable insights that could potentially revolutionize nutritional management practices in pediatric oncology.
