Aladina Foundation Report on the EPICKids Project
Project Description
The Aladina Foundation is at the forefront of an innovative international study aimed at assessing the influence of Mediterranean dietary patterns on mitigating the side effects of cancer treatments and improving survival outcomes for children with cancer. The EPICKids project is structured to produce educational resources based on objective findings and critical nutritional parameters. These guides are intended to support healthcare professionals in tracking the nutritional health of children and adolescents in Southern Europe diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and specific brain tumors.
This pioneering study involves esteemed collaborators such as Columbia University's Irving Medical Center and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), affiliated with the World Health Organization (WHO). Participating medical centers include Hospital Niño Jesús and La Paz in Madrid, Sant Joan de Déu and Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona, Virgen del Rocío in Sevilla, alongside Italy’s Fondazione Monza e Brianza and Fondazione IRCCS, and Aghia Sofia Hospital in Athens.
Project Impact
The EPICKids project remains in its initial phase, where critical data collection is underway. As such, it is too early to present preliminary findings that can be generalized. However, the anticipated significance of this research in refining nutritional strategies for pediatric oncology patients is unparalleled.
Challenges and Solutions
The primary hurdle of the EPICKids project stems from its nascent stage, requiring a meticulous focus on accumulating reliable data for subsequent analysis. This foundational phase is pivotal, as it sets the groundwork for a comprehensive understanding of the data and its implications.
Future Steps
The EPICKids study represents a sustained, multi-national endeavor. Moving forward, we will continue to advance this research with unwavering adherence to established protocols, fostering strong partnerships across our international network of hospitals and research institutions. Our objective remains to generate actionable insights capable of transforming the nutritional care of children undergoing cancer treatment.
