It was absolutely incredible to spend the winter holidays with our boys. For Christmas they cut a branch of a tree and we all decorated it. We had all our children from the children's home and from our helpline celebrate together - a lot of presents, chocolates, games and excitement. It was so good to see them happy.
We are so proud if Gopi who is working now and was even now offered a role of an interim manager at a different branch of the restaurant that he is working at! He will not be doing this now as he attends his college classes in the morning and cannot move to a different city but such an achievement!
This week we have linked two boys from our Helpline with our children's home so now we have 23 boys living at the home. The new boys will receive in house classes until April and then will join the regular school with the rest of the boys. One of the boys is only 4 years old so a bit younger than we would normally welcome to our home but he has no family and nowhere else to go - and the boys were more than happy to welcome him as their new brother.
In March 8 more of our boys will be finishing their basic education and then starting college in June. We couldn't be prouder - they are all studying so hard and making incredible progress. And we will have a special treat for the older boys in April, after their exams - we will take them to south India to see the sea for the first time! We will post about the trip in our next report here!
Whilst we were there, the staff were finishing our survey of street children in Birgunj and we're now putting all the findings into a report - we will share the results in my next report here. It looks like there are now less children actually living/sleeping on the streets but the number of children that stay on the street during the day, beg or work (often with their parents or siblings) is still high. This year we will try and plan different types of activities, most likely with a focus on education, to address the changing needs in the area.
Thank you so much for all your support!
