As we inch closer towards reaching the 2000 mark of BREAD Children's libraries established, we are happy to see a few of the positive changes which are happening on the School library landscape. In a recent district level workshop organised in Karimnagar, where we invited around 100 schools in the vicinity; we got a lot of positive feedback on the library, books and the usefulness of the libraries for the children.
We were pleasantly surprised to see that there was a request for story books, picture books, multi language books. BREAD society is a strong advocate for story books and the need for children to read these in early years. This helps strengthen the reading habit while also helping improve the vocabulary and language comprehension.
There is also a tendency amongst the teachers to constantly seek for academic books and knowledge based books. Each school library is allocated a budget every year by the government, which is meant for replenishing books. We have urged the schools to spent those funds for the academic needs of the children.
Of course the negative trend of not having (or recruiting) library teachers is not welcome and is something which will negatively affect the long term upkeep of libraries. We are however hopeful that just as we see a change from pure academic books to story books with pictures, there will be a change in this aspect in the times to come.
