In Chitende, Malawi, seasonal rains cut off our rural community of 1,000+ people from healthcare, markets, and essential services. We're working alongside our local partners and community to reconstruct the road. This will provide year-round access and unlock future infrastructure developments, like water and electricity. After successfully building a bridge in 2020 that led to an improved water source at the school and new small health clinic, we're ready to tackle the rest of the road!
The community of Chitende has never had access to a proper road. What used to be only a foot path was widened by community members in 2019 to accommodate motorbikes and sometimes high clearance vehicles. Every rainy season, many parts of the road become impassable and completely washed out. The 1000+ residents using this path lose access to vital health services, markets, and it severely disrupts the ability of students and teachers to access the school for half of every year.
The Cove Collective will hire professional contractors and work with local community leaders to construct six bridges and three culverts along roughly 3 miles of road. This project will also provide temporary employment to approximately 50 local households during the construction process. We will also incorporate sustainable environmental practices and education to prevent further erosion of the road. This will allow residents to easily access health services, markets and the school all year.
This project will create further economic opportunities for the 1000+ residents living on this rural stretch of road by restoring access to a wider fish market, which is the primary livelihood for most households. It will allow the government to bring the power grid to the community, which will allow at least 40 households that are already wired to gain immediate access to power. It will allow the 6 primary school teachers to commute to work during rainy season.
