Summary

Many children with disabilities in Kenya are limited in access to therapy services and nutritious foods that can help them improve their physical, emotional and mental health. The clean plate nutrition and therapy project serves children with Autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome, in Mathare slums by giving them occupational and speech therapy services for free every week. The children also get nutritious food parcels each month. You too can be part of their recovery journey by donating now.

Challenge

The disability community represents the largest minority in the world. Parents of children with disabilities find it extremely difficult to pay for services like occupational and speech therapy and to afford nutritious foods for their children. The average household income for these parents and guardians is $80 per month in Kenyan shillings. This means that if we do nothing to help, then many children with disabilities in Kenyan slums will go without food and crucial therapy services.

Solution

Meeting our fundraising goal will allow us to provide a full year of occupational and speech therapy for 100 children with disabilities and supply their families with food parcels monthly throughout the year. The combination of therapy and nutritious food has a great impact on the life of a child living with a disability, it allows them in the long run to grow into young independent adults who can by themselves navigate the activities of daily living. The success rate of this program is 90%.

Long-Term Impact

Since 2017, The clean plate nutrition and therapy project has provided service to more than 300 children with disabilities from low-income neighborhoods giving them consistent access to nutritious foods and crucial therapy services like occupational and speech therapies. This has seen the children in the program record great improvement and given hope to their parents and caregivers. Through the nutrition component of the program, we have been able to feed 300 families directly.
