Empowering Women Through Improved Access to Clean Water in Tororo District
Access to clean water has a direct impact on the lives of women and girls in rural communities throughout Tororo District. During this reporting period, our project continued to address the burden faced by women who traditionally spend many hours each day collecting water for their households. Before the intervention, many women walked several kilometers to reach unsafe water sources, often carrying heavy jerrycans back home. This daily responsibility limited their ability to engage in income-generating activities, community leadership, and other productive opportunities.
Through donor support, communities benefited from improved water access closer to their homes. Women reported significant reductions in the time spent collecting water, allowing them to dedicate more time to farming, small businesses, childcare, and participation in community development activities. The availability of clean water has also improved household hygiene and reduced the frequency of water-related illnesses among family members.
Women's groups played an important role in project implementation. They participated in community meetings, hygiene awareness campaigns, and water management committees. Their involvement strengthened local ownership and ensured that the voices of primary water users were represented in decision-making processes.
Community members have expressed appreciation for the positive changes resulting from the project. Families now access cleaner water more conveniently, reducing physical strain and improving overall well-being. Women have become strong advocates for water source protection and proper hygiene practices.
As the project continues, empowering women remains a central objective. Improved access to safe water is not only improving health outcomes but also creating opportunities for economic growth, leadership, and greater gender equality across rural communities in Tororo District.
