Reducing the Burden of Water Collection in Tororo
For many rural families, collecting water is a daily responsibility that can consume several hours. When community boreholes break down, this burden becomes even greater. AlliedAid Uganda recently responded to this challenge by supporting the repair of five community boreholes in Tororo District, Eastern Uganda.
Prior to the intervention, residents depending on these water points were forced to search for alternative sources. Women, girls, and children were among those most affected because they often carry the responsibility of collecting water for their households.
GlobalGiving donors provided valuable support that enabled AlliedAid Uganda to mobilize technical teams and acquire the necessary repair materials. Each borehole was inspected individually, and technicians worked to restore the damaged pumping systems. Following completion, the water points were tested and returned to community use.
The repaired boreholes are reducing the distance many residents need to travel to access water. This has helped families save valuable time and energy. Children can dedicate more time to education, while adults can focus on farming, small businesses, and other livelihood activities.
The intervention is also helping communities improve their hygiene practices. Having a reliable water source nearby makes it easier for households to clean their homes, wash hands, prepare food safely, and maintain personal hygiene.
AlliedAid Uganda is working with local leaders and community members to promote sustainable management of the five boreholes. Residents are encouraged to protect the water points, keep the surrounding areas clean, and contribute to routine maintenance.
Every contribution to this project has helped create practical change. We sincerely appreciate our GlobalGiving donors for helping reduce the burden of water collection and improve the wellbeing of rural families in Tororo District.
