OVERVIEW
This report provides an update on the successful completion of the water, washroom, and hygiene project at the Youth For Change Educational Center, a school serving over 600 students in the Asuofua New Site, Ashanti Region of Ghana. This project is part of the broader "Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana" initiative led by Young Visionary Leaders Ghana (YVLG).
The initiative seeks to deliver clean and safe drinking water to underserved and marginalized populations across Ghana, including children, women, and people with disabilities. By addressing the water and sanitation challenges faced by students and staff at the Youth For Change Educational Center, the project contributes significantly to improving health, education, and quality of life outcomes for the school and surrounding community.
PROJECT DETAILS
The project involved the construction of a mechanized borehole water system, bathhouse, and handwashing facilities to address the pressing WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) needs of the school. Key features of the project included:
- A 100-meter-deep mechanized borehole equipped with a 2Hp pump.
- Two 7,000-liter storage tanks mounted on a concrete platform.
- A 16/7 feet bathhouse with four standing showers (two for boys and two for girls).
- Fifteen taps strategically positioned for access by students, staff, and community members.
- Eight outward-facing taps (six lower and two standing) for the community and seven inward-facing taps for the school.
- Four handwashing basins installed in front of classroom blocks to promote hygiene.
- Water connections to washrooms, classrooms, the kitchen, toilets, and canteen.
The system was designed to ensure that the school has sufficient water during peak periods in the mornings and evenings.
BENEFICIARIES
The project directly benefits over 600 students and dozens of staff at the Youth For Change Educational Center. Additionally, approximately 2,000 community members of the Asuofua New Site now have access to potable water through the outward-facing taps.
This intervention addresses not only the school’s water needs but also contributes to community health and well-being.
IMPACT STORIES
Students have shared stories of how access to clean water has transformed their daily routines. For example, many no longer arrive late or exhausted to class after long walks to fetch water. Hygiene-related illnesses have decreased, and teachers report improved classroom focus and participation.
The school director highlighted that the new facilities have created a safer and more conducive learning environment, which is expected to reflect in better academic outcomes.
CHALLENGES
Despite this milestone, the Clean Water for 100 Communities in Ghana initiative still faces funding gaps. To date, only a fraction of the required $27,000 per site has been raised through individual donors and campaigns like GlobalGiving’s Little by Little.
Securing consistent funding remains a key challenge to scaling similar interventions.
ACTIONABLE MEASURES
YVLG continues to implement strategic fundraising campaigns, utilizing social media, Giving Tuesday, and GlobalGiving platform campaigns. We are also engaging local stakeholders and potential corporate sponsors to support future projects. Our goal remains to reach 900,000 Ghanaians with clean water through similar life-changing projects.
CONCLUSION
The Youth For Change Educational Center water project exemplifies the transformative power of community-driven development. Thanks to the generosity of our partners and donors, hundreds of students and thousands of community members now enjoy improved health, sanitation, and learning conditions. YVLG remains committed to replicating this success across Ghana, ensuring that every child has access to clean water and a brighter future.
