No one in Gaza can get enough water to meet their most basic needs but with your support MECA provides nearly a million gallons of clean drinking water each month for people living in tent camps throughout Gaza. We were even able to build or upgrade 10 solar-powered water purification units with materials and expertise found in Gaza in the last 14 months.
The most recent water purificaton unit we installed is located in Gaza City in northern Gaza. Using solar panels we also sourced and installed, the unit now provides approximately 2,000 gallons of clean drinking water every day. We installed new faucets in the courtyard outside the building so water is easily accessible to everyone in the neighborhood. The building itself is being used as shelter for many families who were forced to flee North Gaza during the latest Israeli siege. All in all, there are around 5,000 people benefiting from the clean water. Prior to this project, families in the neighborhood either had to walk several kilometers to get clean water or wait for a weekly water delivery.
Yasseen, one of MECA's staff in Gaza, visited the new Maia unit this morning and told me "Many families were waiting in line to fill up water but it was very organized and everyone had a turn. The unit is working well and families can count on coming there at certain hours every day to get water."
With your support, MECA will continue to find clean, safe drinking water and get it to people who desperately need it.
In solidarity,
All of us at MECA
P.S. Last week, Human Rights Watch issued a report called “Extermination and Acts of Genocide: Israel Deliberately Depriving Palestinians in Gaza of Water,” saying that Israel has deliberately deprived the majority of Palestinians living in Gaza of the bare minimum amount of water, which has contributed to death and widespread disease.
