The cool season in Senegal has come to an end, and daily temperatures now regularly soar to 110 degrees F, cooling to about 95 degrees in the evening. In these scorching hot days, availability of clean, abundant water is vital. And thanks to your support, community garden cooperative members are able to continue growing food even during this inhospitable time of year in Senegal’s desert.
Mbene is a fish and vegetable seller from the community of Fass Kane. As a widow supporting a family of 8, it was hard to makes ends meet. But things changed after her community partnered with CREATE!.
“Before CREATE! came to our village, I used to drink the salty water from the old borehole wells, and I frequently got sick,” she explains “but now with the clean water from the rehabilitated well I’ve noticed my health has been much better.”
Increased access to water in Fass Kane has had other benefits as well. “Since our well was rehabilitated, we can now grow vegetables in the community and there are many villagers who come here to get water,” Mbene says. “My own community and even others from outside the village are benefiting from CREATE!’s help.”
As Mbene observed, the fresh water from her community’s well is now also reaching neighboring villages, benefiting families in rural Senegal far and wide. We estimate that 4,000-6,000 gallons of water are now being pumped per village per day, on average, thanks to your support!
It’s exciting to see the growing capacity of our project, but our work is far from over. With your contributions, we can help more communities gain access to this vital resource so that more people can grow food, satisfy household needs, improve sanitation, and access clean drinking water. As another beneficiary, Ngone said, “With water, we can do anything.” We couldn’t agree more! Thank you for your continued support, and stay tuned for more updates on this project as we get closer to our goal of providing clean water for 1,500 people in rural Senegal.
