Families in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala often rely on unsafe water or must spend a significant portion of their income on bottled water. This project provides clean, safe drinking water through household filtration systems, hands-on training, and student-led follow-up support. Building on work with over 200 families, it expands access across the community while reducing costs, saving time, and ensuring long-term use through local leadership and monitoring.
In San Juan Comalapa, many families lack access to safe drinking water and rely on contaminated taps, rivers, or household pilas where water can carry bacteria and parasites. Some purchase water in plastic sachets or bottles, creating ongoing costs and plastic waste. To make water safe, many must boil it daily, requiring time, fuel, and money they often cannot afford. This leads to preventable illnesses, especially for children, impacting health and school attendance.
This project provides families in San Juan Comalapa with household water filters that remove bacteria and parasites, giving immediate access to safe drinking water. Each filter is distributed through hands-on training, where families learn how to use and maintain their system. We work with local students and community ambassadors who support families after installation. Follow-up visits help ensure long-term use and sustained access within the community.
Families gain reliable access to safe drinking water, reducing illness and reliance on boiling or purchased water. This saves time, lowers household costs, and reduces plastic waste. Through student ambassadors, ongoing follow-up, and simple impact tracking, the project builds a community-led system that expands over time. The long-term goal is full access to clean water across Comalapa through local leadership and sustained support.
