Bangladesh suffers from devastating tropical cyclones frequently, due to its unique geographic location. The coastal areas of Bangladesh are hit by cyclones almost every year. The Sundarbans coastal people are vulnerable to cyclones associated with tidal surge particularly in the pre-monsoon months of April-May and post-monsoon months of October November. BEDS together with the trained Village Disaster Management Committee (VDMC) members are working to mitigate the disaster risks of the Sundarbans coastal community of Bangladesh.
Impact:
Through this initiative we enhance the capacity of the VDMC members and these members are now working at the community level to let people know the pre-during and post disaster roles of the people. Through this the loss due to disasters both economic and life have been reduced. Because now people know what they have to do if there is a disaster attack and how to mitigate the loss due to disasters.
Feedbacks from the beneficiaries:
One of the beneficiaries expresses her feelings.
“My home is near the Sundarbans riverbank. I lost everything during the catastrophic cyclone Aila which occurred in 2009. I lost my cattle and home. I became homeless then. Because I did not have any disaster preparedness knowledge. But in recent years no loss due to cyclones has happened. Because BEDS and VDMC members are giving us training on what we should do to mitigate the loss of cyclones. Now I know what to do before, during and after any cyclone. Last year a strong cyclone named Amphan attacked our coast. But no harm happened to me this time. Because I was ready for the disaster. I was fully ready this time. VDMC members along with the BEDS team informed me before the cyclone attack and helped me to settle BEDS cyclone shelter and training center along with my cattle. I am really grateful to BEDS for their support”
