Sundarbans Coastal zone of Bangladesh is mostly susceptible to disaster damage as it faces the first attack of any natural calamities. As April-May is the most vulnerable period for natural disasters, BEDS together with Village Disaster Management Committee (VDMC) members are working to mitigate the disaster risks of the Sundarbans coastal community of Bangladesh.
Impact:
Capacity of the southwestern disaster vulnerable community increased through the regular basis capacity development on disaster preparedness by the VDMC members. This initiative has lessened the economic and life loss of the Sundarbans coastal community. Because people are much aware now and they know what to do before, during and after disasters.
Feedback from the beneficiary:
One of the beneficiaries expresses his feelings like:
“I live beside the Sundarbans riverside. Every year so many strong catastrophic cyclones attack our shoreline. I can remember the devastation of cyclone Aila (2009) and Sidr (2007). Most of the people along with me lost our everything during those cyclones. My home was totally destroyed, I lost my paddy and two cows died. Those were my resources upon which I earned my bread. Those disasters snatched everything from me. I was not prepared for the disaster that’s why I lost everything. Now VDMC members with the help of BEDS staffs are regularly teaching us what we should do, what should be our move during and after any disasters. Now we know how to tackle any disasters. Last two-year two cyclone attack in our shore named Amphan and Foni. But no damage happened to me. Because I was ready for the disaster. I took all necessary measures that BEDS and VDMC members taught us. I thank BEDS and VDMC members for helping us to mitigate the disaster loss.”
