Bangladesh is a disaster-prone country, and its extensive coastal region is particularly vulnerable to such events. Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS), a non-profit organization focused on coastal communities, undertaking several initiatives like leadership training on Community-Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) to enhance the capacities of the community members to take transparent, accountable and inclusive Climate Action at the grassroot levels. This initiative spans 10 unions across four upazilas in Khulna (Dacope) and Satkhira (Debhata, Asashuni, and Shyamnagar), aiming to prepare disaster-ready communities by equipping local leaders with essential Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) skills.
The leadership training on CMDRR focused on imparting knowledge and practical skills in disaster risk management. Participants were introduced to the CMDRR framework, including key principles such as the Four Minimums. The training emphasized hands-on exercises in hazard mapping, vulnerability assessments, risk evaluation, and action planning through interactive discussions, role-playing, and group activities. This approach not only enhanced their understanding of DRR strategies but also enabled them to conduct community-level risk assessments effectively. A critical component of the training was the integration of climate finance governance and sustainable funding approaches. Through case studies and scenario-based discussions, participants learned about various funding mechanisms and the importance of sustainable financial strategies in disaster management. Furthermore, the training fostered the development of community-specific CMDRR action plans, empowering group leaders to disseminate their acquired knowledge to wider community members.
Despite its success, the training faced challenges, such as excluding the broader community, difficulties in carrying out practical exercises, and balancing detailed content with interactive sessions. Furthermore, ensuring the long-term sustainability of CMDRR initiatives and adequately preparing group leaders for effective knowledge-sharing continue to be challenges. However, the participants' confidence and community resilience against climate and disaster risks could be greatly improved if we successfully engage and raise awareness among the general public, community leaders, and local elites in disaster-prone areas. Therefore, it would effectively reduce climate and disaster risks while also strengthening community resilience, if we have the opportunity to organize and raise awareness among the broader population through more awareness campaigns.
