Bangladesh, being highly disaster-prone especially in its coastal regions—requires proactive and community-centered approaches to resilience. The Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS), a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering coastal communities, has been implementing initiatives such as leadership training on Community-Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR). These efforts aim to strengthen grassroots capacities by equipping local leaders with essential DRR skills, fostering transparent, accountable, and inclusive climate action, and building disaster-resilient communities from the ground up.
As part of ensuring the wider dissemination and application of this knowledge at the community level, Knowledge Sharing Meetings were conducted with group members to disseminate the key learnings from the CMDRR training. The session aimed to ensure that the participants who did not directly attend the training could still benefit from the insights and strategies discussed. So far, this initiative spans 2 unions of Shyamnagar upazila under Satkhira district.
During the meeting, trained group leaders shared critical components of the CMDRR approach, including community-based risk assessment, disaster preparedness planning, early warning systems, and response mechanisms. The session encouraged open discussion and participatory learning, allowing members to reflect on local risks and identify community-driven actions for resilience building.
The Knowledge Sharing Meeting on CMDRR has proven to be a pivotal step toward strengthening community resilience through peer-to-peer learning and collective action. By empowering group members with practical knowledge and participatory tools, the initiative has fostered a culture of preparedness and local ownership.
The enthusiasm and engagement shown by the community reflect a strong foundation for scaling up such initiatives. Continued support from donor agencies will not only sustain this momentum but also amplify the impact across other vulnerable regions. We believe that with strategic investment and collaboration, we can co-create a resilient future rooted in community leadership and adaptive capacity.
