The Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS) continues to lead impactful, community-based adaptation efforts in the climate-vulnerable coastal areas of Satkhira district. This initiative aims to strengthen grassroots resilience in regions regularly affected by cyclones, salinity intrusion, and tidal flooding climate hazards that threaten lives and livelihoods.
The main objectives of the initiative were to raise awareness about the localized impacts of climate change, build community capacity in adaptation strategies particularly through Community-Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) and reinforce the role of local governance structures, such as Union Disaster Management Committees (UDMCs), in planning and implementation. A strong emphasis was placed on inclusivity by actively engaging youth, women, and ward representatives to ensure that diverse community voices were represented throughout the process.
Key activities included interactive training sessions focused on climate risk identification, early warning systems, and nature-based adaptation techniques such as mangrove restoration and rainwater harvesting. Community members participated in group discussions to share local knowledge, identify priority hazards, and co-develop community-specific action plans. These participatory activities helped to foster a sense of ownership and promote sustainable, locally-led solutions.
As a result of the initiative, communities demonstrated a much stronger understanding of their climate vulnerabilities and the tools available to address them. Local leaders and volunteers reported increased confidence in their ability to respond to disasters, engage in proactive planning, and effectively disseminate early warning system (EWS) information. Furthermore, the process significantly enhanced coordination between community members and local government institutions, creating a more cohesive and responsive system for addressing future climatic events.
This initiative has proven to be a successful model for building climate resilience at the grassroots level. To replicate and scale this approach in other high-risk coastal areas, BEDS is seeking support from donor agencies that are committed to climate adaptation, community empowerment, and sustainable development. Strategic investment in such initiatives will help ensure a more resilient and climate-ready future for Bangladesh’s most vulnerable communities.
