In a country already scarred by stark differences in the quality of education between public and private schools, as well as low literacy rates, the pandemic has affected the learning of approximately 40 million students across Pakistan. The World Bank has claimed that "even the most optimistic scenario suggests an overall loss of learning for every child enrolled."

 

According to a study by UNICEF, students learned significantly less from home, compared with classroom learning before the pandemic. Their learning was harmed by a lack of access to technology, network connectivity issues, and low levels of motivation.

 

As reported by UNICEF, remote learning was not possible for 23% of young children due to a lack of access to digital devices. The pandemic has hit poor and disadvantaged families the hardest, as they are unable to purchase even a single device.

 

Geographical barriers have also had an impact. Around 26% of urban youth had no access to technology whereas, in the countryside, that figure rose to 36%.

 

Remote learning is also challenging for children with disabilities and girls. 

 

Students also had to drop out due to financial losses during the pandemic. Pakistan's economy was hit hard by the pandemic.

 

Currently, Pakistan has the world’s second-highest number of out-of-school children (OOSC) with an estimated 22.8 million children aged 5-16 not attending school, representing 44 percent of the total population in this age group. In the 5-9 age group, 5 million children are not enrolled in schools and after primary-school age, the number of OOSC doubles, with 11.4 million adolescents between the ages of 10-14 not receiving formal education. Disparities based on gender, socio-economic status, and geography are significant; in Sindh, 52 percent of the poorest children (58 percent girls) are out of school, and in Balochistan, 78 percent of girls are out of school.

 

Nearly 10.7 million boys and 8.6 million girls are enrolled at the primary level and this drops to 3.6 million boys and 2.8 million girls at the lower secondary level.

The problems associated with the education system of Pakistan are lack of adequate budget, lack of policy implementation, defective examination system, poor physical facilities, lack of teacher quality, lack of implementation of education policies, directionless education, low enrollment, high scale dropouts, political interference, outdated curriculum, corruption, poor management and supervision, lack of research, and lack of uniformity. The above-mentioned problems could be solved by the formulation of rational policies and plans and by ensuring proper implementation of the policies. Education is a nourishing force. It is a constructive factor for any society. Education enables people to work for their development and growth. Hence education brings out the hidden potentialities of individuals and develops them.

During the COVID19 Pandemic, NUR Foundation and Fatima Memorial Hospital tirelessly worked on the construction and are eyeing to complete the project which is taking more time than usual due to lack of funds. 

 

With the challenges mentioned above, NUR Foundation started its schools in the year 1996 and since then, it has not only taken 18000 children out of the dark holes of illiteracy but also helped them in attaining jobs to earn a respectable living. However, the current schools are not sufficient to cater to the needs of the rising number of students. Hence, in pursuit of its mission of providing free education to the underprivileged in Malikpur, NUR Foundation has started the project of constructing a College building for them. In order to finance the building, generous donations from our esteemed donors are necessary.

With the COVID-19 pandemic engendering massive socio-economic disruptions in an unprecedented manner, education systems — significant social institutions — have been adversely impacted worldwide. While confronting a series of ills ailing its structure for many decades, the existing educational crisis in Pakistan was exacerbated by the pandemic starting in late February 2020, when Pakistan recorded its first cases. One of the first steps taken by the authorities in Pakistan to prevent the spread of COVID-19 was the closure of educational institutions.

It cannot be ignored that education holds immense significance for any nation to prosper and develop. But COVID-19 has dismantled traditional educational infrastructure as lockdowns were implemented which restricted the ability of the students to learn in an effective physical setting. Certainly, a sudden shift toward digital classrooms led to disturbances for students and teachers alike. The training of teachers, digital experience of students and other associated matters such as internet access, computer availability and so on also played a role.

Students belonging to the poverty stricken areas are worse off when it comes to accessing education owing to lack of facilities. Our major concern is that we are in process of building the college building in an area where the entire student body is affected due to lack of facilities. Around 48 percent of schools in the country do not have toilets, boundary walls, electricity and drinking water while Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkwa (K-P) are ahead of the other two provinces – Sindh and Balochistan – on various educational parameters.
