Project Report | Mar 4, 2024
The Other Side of the Rice Field

By John Marshall | Project Leader

For our latest report, we’d like to introduce you to one of the students we plan to enroll this year. Her name is Roshni and she is currently in need of a sponsor. Maybe that’s you.

Roshni’s story begins in a small village just behind our orphanage property. She was born in November, so the typically hot Indian air was cooler when she arrived—but the weather was the only easy part of her beginning. Her family was extremely poor and there was very little to feed a new baby girl. Day by day, month by month, Roshni grew weaker, crying out for more food that did not come. By the time she was nine months old, she was in critical condition.

The small hut where her family lived was set behind one of our large rice fields. It’s just a guess, but perhaps Roshi’s mom looked out at that rice—all that food—for days, listening to the happy chatter of children, dreaming of a better life for her daughter.

When summer came and the brutally hot temperatures returned, there were no options left. Roshni was carried down the dirt road that leads to the other side of the rice field where she became the newest member of our large Mission family. It was just a short walk, but it changed every aspect of her young life and her future.

Roshni is now 19, tall and poised with a sharp curiosity for others. Her life, so under threat at the start, is now the picture of health and possibility. She keeps in touch with her family, she's surrounded by friends, she loves to dance, and she hopes to study business in college. “Maybe start an online business one day,” she says. We know she'll be a success at whatever she does.

And when success comes, what will she do?

"When I graduate from University and become successful," she says, "first I'll help my family, and then I would really love to help someone else in graduating too so they can also help others."

To all of our current contributors, thanks so much for your continuted support. If anyone would like to help sponsor Roshni, please reach out and let us know.
