School N.1 is a sports school in Balti and it operates a summer camp on the outskirts of the city. The school’s director, Dmitri, and Speranta Terrei’s president, Feodora (Dora) organized a sporty way to engage students in tuberculosis (TB) control in Moldova. Before football, swimming, and sailing lessons, the students came to Speranta Terrei’s Centre for Tuberculosis Patients, where Dora and Margarita, our TB screening manager and photographer, had transformed the conference room into a mini theatre.
Students ate popcorn and watched an animated film featuring the football player, Figo, and his team come from behind to defeat TB. In the short film,“Luis Figo and the World Tuberculosis Cup,” players highlight TB symptoms and risk factors, how TB is transmitted, how to prevent transmission, and how to treat TB. Years earlier, Speranta Terrei had conducted a popular TB awareness campaign in Moldovan schools with Figo comics and play theatre, thanks to the support of the StopTB Partnership (https://www.stoptb.org/). Reminiscing, Dora said, “our Figo campaign was effective in catching youngsters’ attention, they learned about TB while dressing the part of characters and play acting.”
After watching the film, School N.1 students eagerly answered questions on TB from Dmitri and Natalia, who is senior specialist in the public health department of Balti municipality. Dmitri told the students Figo was, “a star footballer who lent his fame to the fight against TB.” The students said they would tell their friends and family to watch for such symptoms as prolonged cough and weight loss and to cover their mouths when coughing. Each student received a pamphlet with TB information written for ages 10-12 years and a Speranta Terrei bag. Admiring the vibrant logo on the bags, one of the students said, “I will carry my sports clothes in it.”
Speranta Terrei thanks our GlobalGiving donors, whose contributions are critical to maintaining our Centre, a place for teachers, students, and public health officials to come together in our collective fight against TB.
