May 2023 Compassionate Hands Update

By Anne Njeri | Executive Director

We would first like to thank God for keeping us safe this far, despite it being a cold season characterized by a high prevalence of opportunistic illness among the children, the organization was able to handle the season quite well by putting the necessary precautions in place to ensure the children are safe and sound.

It is also a season that has been characterized by political and economic instability in our country. We have experienced a hike in price for basic commodities which includes food. The organization managed to navigate these obstacles well and was able to provide the children with adequate food and a stable, safe living environment.

Rehabilitation programs

This department forms the backbone of the organizations operations. Through the years GlobalGiving foundation has provided support to this particular area in addition to the sustainable projects of the organization. Rehabilitation programs provide tools to enable the children acquire important skills of daily living.

The following are the milestone achieved during the first quarter of the year 2023:

  • The organization was able to provide the children with regular physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions, which helps the children with their physical well-being. A great number of children have been able to maintain a stable condition; with reduced muscle stiffness, a gain in muscle strength and they are able to gain self-dependence.
  • With provision of a well-balanced diet, which includes fruits and vegetables and some of the products produced in the sustainable projects of the organization, has played an important role in growth and development of the children.
  • The organization was able to provide a steady supply of the daily maintenance medication required by most of the children to counter the adverse effects of their illness which includes convulsions and hyper activeness.
  • The organization was also able to maintain a smooth flow of the educational programs for the children, which has resulted in a great number of the children being able to acquire helpful skills of daily living.
  • Generally the children are doing well, and we are pleased with both of our efforts and inputs in their journey of disability.

Challenges observed

  • There is a great need for addition of more equipment for rehabilitation and also addition of resources to equip the vocational training center in the organization to allow the children access quality services regularly.
  • Increase more programs as a number of the children are approaching their adulthood, the organization is preparing for a fruitful exit strategy.

Objectives for the second quarter

  • The organization wishes to strengthen the rehabilitation and vocational programs in the institution as part of quality service delivery to the children.
  • The organization will also be working towards bettering the education system currently laid for the betterment of the children’s lives.
  • Strengthen the ties with our major partners which include GlobalGiving which has been a major and regular pillar to the organization.
