Palliative Care in Action: Project Update

By Jo Giles | Head Angel

It’s the start of a new year and we want to wish you and yours all the best for the year ahead! Your generosity makes it possible for Footprints 4 Sam to bring compassionate, holistic and dignified palliative care to children with life-limiting illnesses and their families in under-resourced state hospitals.

Palliative care extends beyond medical treatment alone. It focuses on quality of life, comfort, symptom management and emotional support during the most vulnerable time in a family’s journey. Towards the end of last year, your support helped us deliver meaningful interventions that directly reflect this approach.

As South Africa entered the festive season, we reached a significant milestone through our Super Sam Hero Bucket Initiative, with over R1 million invested to date in providing essential food items and vital toiletries to families caring for a child with a life-limiting illness. In December, 210 Super Sam Hero Buckets were delivered across Johannesburg, Cape Town, and KwaZulu-Natal, easing daily pressures, strengthening food security and allowing caregivers to focus more fully on their child’s comfort and care.

In addition, just before Christmas 200 gift bags were delivered to children at Rahima Moosa Mother & Child Hospital. Packed with age-appropriate educational toys, these gift bags provided comfort, emotional support and moments of normality and joy for children spending extended periods in hospital. The gift bags were made possible through generous funding from Hot Cares, following a radio interview with our Co-Founder and Sam’s mum, Melissa.

Donations to this project make compassionate palliative care possible by addressing both medical and non-medical needs, reducing caregiver stress and restoring dignity during incredibly difficult times.

Thank you for helping us continue this vital work and for being part of our journey.

Until next time!

Warmest regards

Jo and the Footprints 4 Sam Team
