Palliative care is ensuring quality of life, comfort, symptom management and emotional support to those facing a life limiting illness. The goal of this essential project will be for Footprints 4 Sam to strengthen palliative care services in under-resourced state hospitals in South Africa , ensuring that every child and their family receive holistic and dignified support at the most vulnerable time of their lives.
In South Africa, thousands are living with a life-limiting illness and are treated in state hospitals that are under-resourced, understaffed and overcrowded. Due to lack of funding, limited space and limited training of staff, palliative care is often unavailable or inconsistent. Families face emotional, physical and financial hardship. Healthcare professionals in these environments also work under under immense pressure, with limited resources and support to provide holistic care.
Through our six key initiatives we will supply food buckets, transport patients and support healthcare workers by offering grief counselling and training. As part of our Beautiful Memories initiative, our Rainbow Days Initiative, is a precious opportunity for mothers and children who are chronically ill to spend a day wrapped in love with their loved ones. These special days celebrate life, create lasting memories and bring joy to families walking through the hardest of journeys.
The long term impact of this project will be to build a network of support for both families and medical teams, ensuring palliative care is accessible, dignified and human-centred in state hospitals. By strengthening palliative care in the state system, Footprints 4 Sam is helping to create a more humane, holistic healthcare model that can be replicated in other hospitals across South Africa.
