The Newest Mobile Library Has Rolled Into Town!

Our Latest Vehicle!
Our Latest Vehicle!
Kenya Connect's Library Card and School Library Days are expanding with the acquisition of a new four-wheel drive truck!  Having two vehicles means that we can reach even more schools and double our impact!  Students and teachers are embracing reading and clamoring to join our program.  Along with bringing the library program to schools, our literacy program includes fun book days a Parents' Literacy Council and our latest initiative.... the Reading Challenge!
Kenya Connect's first reading challenge has launched! This program is being pilotied with students from Sofia, Mbaikini, Maanzoni and Nunga Primary Schools and encourages students to read 25 books in a three month period. Thanks to a dynamic group of Garrison Forest students , fun Space Challenge Guides were created that include crossword puzzles, mazes, logic problems and space facts. In addition to these engaging space activities, students will be listing the books they read in the guide.
Robyn Vierra, leader of the Punahou School teachers who were volunteering in Kenya, began the "lift off" by reading, " There's No Place Like Space" a Cat in the Hat book. This talented group of visiting teachers designed a series of activities to celebrate the launch of the program at a special Fun Book Enrichment Day which included a Moon Walk to build sentences, Planet Bingo, Alien Comic Dialog, Origami Bookmarks and Rocket Word Builders.
The children were thrilled to receive these colorful guides filled with games and puzzles and the teachers welcomed this new program. Teacher Catherine at Sofia Primary School said, "Our children seem so excited by this program and I know it will help encourage more reading." Every Friday afternoon, students at Sofia put away their textbooks and read since the Head Teacher believes this is critical to the students' success.
This new reading challenge program is part of our strategy to become #TheVillageThatReads.  Donations from friends like you help support this program by providing support to our librarian and her assistants, provide fuel for our library vehicles, and help us purchase more books for our library, especially those purchased in Kenya.
Thank you for bring the joy, wonder and knowledge of books to our students in Wamunyu.  New worlds and ideas are being opened to them as a result of donors like you!
