Thank you for supporting David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF).
DSWF funds education initiatives across Africa and Asia focussed on positive engagement and environmental awareness. In Zambia through our ground-based conservation partner Game Rangers International (GRI) Conservation clubs have been implemented to provide local communities with vital and engaging educational activities. This includes classes and immersive experiences on conservation and the environment, the building and improvement of schools and their facilities, and the employment and training of teachers.
Last year, thanks to funding from DSWF donors, A new education officer Brian Bulongo was employed by GRI. Brian now supports 25 local schools including the New Ngoma Primary School, which encompasses 57 students from Grade 1-Grade 4 who previously had to walk over 6km to the nearest school. Brian has been instrumental in providing this new school with resources, training, teaching support, and administrative assistance. Brian firstly equipped the school with some basic stationary supplies and a new whiteboard, and then in April he managed to acquire twenty school desks to provide a more comfortable learning environment for the children of New Ngoma Primary School. Due to the development of the school and the additional support which we have provided, the local government are now employing more teachers and planning a further expansion of the school.
Conservation education support is highly important within the New Ngoma community, which consists of approximately 350 individuals. The community are situated right at the edge of a game management area next to the Kafue National Park which is home to a huge variety of species including elephants, lions and other large mammals. As such the community is at high risk to the direct effects of human-wildlife conflict. Through providing conservation education to the community alongside supporting them with sustainable income schemes and women’s empowerment groups, GRI can minimise the risk of human-wildlife conflict and empower the community to protect their environment and wildlife around them.
Supporting art and education has been, and will continue to be, a guiding principle in DSWF’s environmental education work and with your help we can create more success stories in bringing education and engagement to future generations, providing them with the tools and voice to fight for a better future for the earth’s wildlife and wild spaces.
