Lionfish Strategy for the Guatemalan Caribbean in process of approval

By Ximena Flamenco | Project Officer II

As you know, the lionfish is an invasive species that is present in the Mesoamerican Reef (MAR), and has become a serious threat to the marine ecosystem. We continue to work with organizations and authorities in the four countries of the MAR (Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras), to control this threat.

With this in mind, we have supported the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP) in Guatemala in the creation of the Lionfish Strategy for the Guatemalan Caribbean as result of the project “Sustainable actions for the management, reduction and consumption incentive of the lionfish invasive species Pterois volitans (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Caribbean of Guatemala” jointly developed with Seeds of the Ocean (SDO) and the Center for Sea Studies and Aquaculture (CEMA).

As reported before, the actions through this project allowed the control, management and reduction of the lionfish in the Punta de Manabique Wildlife Refuge, as well as the creation of the Lionfish Strategy for the Guatemalan Caribbean. The document has been reviewed and final amendments were addressed. The process is on-going and once approved the strategy will be applied on the field and will guide the actions to control this invasive species.

Getting closer to the approval of the strategy has been able thanks to your support and continuous help and engagement with our projects.

We thank you for your trust.

The MAR Fund Team.
