After 13 months of hard work, the support provided to the National Council of Protected Areas (CONAP), jointly with Seeds of the Ocean (SDO) and the Center for Sea Studies and Aquaculture (CEMA), in Punta de Manabique Wildlife Refuge has paid off.
The project “Sustainable actions for the management, reduction and consumption incentive of the lionfish invasive species Pterois volitans (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Caribbean of Guatemala” has come to a successful end. Through this project actions that allow the control, management and reduction of the lionfish have been established with the creation of the National Strategy and the National Committee of Lionfish P. volitans for the Caribbean of Guatemala. The National Strategy has been presented to CONAP and its waiting approval.
The information acquired through the monitoring and extraction events, developed monthly, has provided knowledge in regards to the species behavior and a baseline has been created. All the catch specimens were used to promote the consumption of the species through a gastronomic event carried out in Puerto Barrios, with the participation of the Women's Group of the El Quetzalito Community.
Each action taken to understanding this species, helps area managers make proper and informed decisions in regards to its control in the Caribbean of Guatemala coast.
This support has been able thanks to your continuous help and engagement with our projects.
We thank you for your trust and we hope this holiday season is full of joy and laughter.
Happy Holidays to you and yours
