Inspiring Future Scientists and Empowering Present-Day Conservationists
One of the most effective ways to protect the future of our oceans is through environmental education. Marine and coastal education serves as the foundation of conservation by giving communities—especially young people—the knowledge they need to become interested, get involved, and take meaningful action.
Since 2022, as part of its educational program, the Marine Innovation Center has reached 2,712 visitors from 19 countries and 50 institutions, of which 80% are students—highlighting its strong impact on younger generations.
Recognizing the importance of environmental education, in 2025 we launched a renewed educational program aimed at inspiring better decision-making, encouraging environmental action, and strengthening the connection between our community and the ocean.
Our program focuses on engaging children and youth in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities that promote marine conservation knowledge. Likewise, one of our objectives is to equip participants with the tools and support needed to take action in protecting our oceans.
So far, the program has been a great success. Children and youth actively contribute to restoration efforts doing activities such as assisting with coral microfragmentation. Through these hands-on experiences, participants not only learn about coral biology and reef restoration, but also directly support the recovery of reef habitats. In the “Build Your Own Reef” activity, participants explore reef ecosystems while creatively designing their own reef in a jar.
Participants have also conducted experiments to understand how mangroves filter water and learned about sargassum, including its biology, environmental impact, and effects on water quality. Educational talks are also part of the program to further strengthen participants' understanding of coastal environments.
These experiences spark curiosity, creativity, and environmental responsibility. The positive response from students, parents, and teachers has been one of the program’s greatest achievements.
Looking ahead, we will continue nurturing future conservationists while expanding our impact across communities and generations.
