Second 15-Day Long Lockdown

COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdowns has caused other issues other than health crisis: it has brought financial ruin to businesses, affecting the country’s economy to its core, limiting productivity and supplies, increasing unemployment and many pother disruptions to the daily functioning of people’s lives.

Centre Marembo began its distribution of foods, farm produce and other basic needs to more than 300 vulnerable young women, teen mothers and pregnant teens (their babies included) rescued from the street and who are survivors of GBV. Our food distribution action is to fight against the fear of food insecurity, hunger and even malnourishment. These women have been affected by the lockdown measures, especially when the Rwanda government announced its second lockdown phase back on January 18^th 2021, after observing rising new cases of the virus due to the winter holidays and celebrations. This year second lockdown lasted for 15 days, unlike the initial 45 days long lockdown back in 2020.

The following items below are the number of items given per beneficiary:

Protein-based foods: 20 kg beans, 4 kg small fish and 6 kg milk cartons.
Non protein-based foods: 20 kg maize flour, 20kg rice, 40 kg vegetables (avocados, pumpkins, etc.) 40 kg fruits (bananas, papayas, etc.), 5kg sugar, 2kg salt, 15kg packages pasta.
Other basic needs: 300+ packages sanitary pads, 300+ packages of soap bars.

The food and goods were distributed to the victims residing in these following areas:

Gasabo district (Kinyama sector, Ndera sector, Kimironko sector, Jali sector and Gisozi sector)
Kicukiro district (Kigarama sector)
Nyarugenge district (Kigali sector)
Kamonyi district (southern province- Runda sector and Musambira sector)

Centre Marembo strategic changes

Covid-19 negative effect: limited medical activity

Centre Marembo made changes on its strategies and activities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are prioritising mainly on food distribution, hygiene and nursing practices. These are extremely important to us as the lack of proper nutritious food and hygiene can weaken the immune system, leaving babies, girls and teens vulnerable to any types of diseases. As for the young mothers, we made sure they’ve already been taught in nursing their babies and other motherhood practices.

Until now activities in the Socio-Economic & Development and Healthcare programs (in which created the Imirasire Youth Clinic & Laboratory, aka IYCL, for providing health services to street children and surrounding community in Kigali) are temporarily suspended due to limited number of beneficiaries and clinic staff, and financial issues.

Both the shelter and the Vocational Training program, which are important in the rehabilitation and reintegration progress, skill-training, and education, are limited in the number of beneficiaries who are:

tested negative for COVID-19;
have no one to seek help from (either from a relative or a friend of the family);
and are most vulnerable to the exposure of GBV, STDs, abuse, and any other acts of violence or dangers that can be encountered in the streets.

Some beneficiaries cannot attend to the Vocational Training as they are mothers who need to take care of their young children or babies back home.

At the shelter, where the rehabilitation and reintegration process takes place, we continue activities that stimulate both the mind and body (such as sports or reading) to not only boost physical strength of the children but also their mental strength as well.
