Prior to the lockdown that happened on the 17th July 2021, Kigali City was implemented with a list of covid-19 measures that limits certain activities (such as social gatherings, weddings, changing business/opening hours, and so on) as the Ministry of Health of Rwanda observed increasing positive Covid-19 cases during the month of June. By June 23rd, new Covid-19 measures were enforced to mitigate the infection rate, in hopes it would reduce the cases in 2 weeks’ time. However, such results were not shown, thus the lockdown on 17th July.
The last day of the lockdown was on July 31st, including a 5-days extension, as the initial date was on the 26the before the Rwanda cabinet’s decision. During the lockdown period, with the proper authorization clearance, Centre Marembo provided aid support on the 17th, 20th, 27th, and 28th July to an estimated number of 50 vulnerable teen mothers, GBV victims, and girls were rescued from the streets of Kigali City.
The distribution was run by four of the Centre Marembo staff members: Executive Director, Communications Officer, Social Assistant and Driver.
The strict preventative measures, as well as the lockdown, increases the vulnerability of these homeless victims who have been living on the streets.
Centre Marembo distributed both non-protein and protein-based foods for each victim, which includes: 2 kg rice, 3kg of maize flour, 1kg sugar, 1kg porridge, 1 kg salt, 3kg beans, 1kg coconuts, 1kg milk and a package of biscuits.
The following listed areas are the places where the aid distribution took place:
Centre Marembo has also provided financial support to cover for safe home accommodation for 48 teen mothers and young girls.
Centre Marembo would like to give their sincerest thanks to the continuous support and donations to our Covid-19 relief project. We are still planning to continue future aid support to the vulnerable community who are struggling with the effects of Covid-19.
We encourage to those to share this project’s link online to bring attention to the dire situation that the street teen mothers are currently facing.
