In April and May of 2021, India faced an unexpected surge in COVID-19 cases. To date, India has reported nearly 35 million cases and more than 480,000 deaths since the pandemic reached its borders in early 2020.
The surge in mid-2021 hit the Indian state of Rajasthan and its rural villages particularly hard. The number of new cases per day increased from 118 to 7,000-9,000. COVID-19 amplified existing challenges around food and water insecurity, sanitation, employment, and health care. Since the beginning of the crisis, we have been working with our partner organization, GRAVIS, to reach out to communities in need across the Thar Desert region of Rajasthan, focusing on the older people.
The funds contributed by our supporters have provided food and hygiene kits for these older people and their families. Between September 2020 and April 2021, we provided 112,800 meals. Since May 2021, we have provided an additional 48,000 meals. In addition, hundreds of older people have benefitted from hygiene kits protecting them from COVID-19.
HelpAge USA and our partners at GRAVIS are deeply grateful for the donations made to support our efforts in Rajasthan. Your donations have made an immeasurable difference in the lives of older people across the Thar Desert. We have decided to end this project to better adapt to the new landscape regarding COVID-19 and will post new projects in the future.
