A third wave of COVID-19 caused the closure of Zambian schools and colleges this month. Only pupils sitting examination resits in July have been able to attend school. The term usually breaks in early August for one month. However, numbers of the virus are now decreasing, and all educational establishments are expected to reopen in mid-August.
The Butterfly Tree has continued to support some 20 schools and 30 rural clinics by providing PPE to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. Each school is given a donation of disinfectant, soap, hand sanitizer, and masks for pupils who cannot afford to buy them. The Butterfly Tree volunteers have also been making masks using local materials.
The hospitals and clinics have been overwhelmed with patients in need of oxygen and care. Sadly, there are not enough beds and nurses, especially in the townships. As always, our focus is in the rural areas as clinics in remote regions get very little support. We are about to start the construction of a new rural health post at Katondo in Nyawa Chiefdom, which will include a clinic, two staff houses, for trained medical personnel, a borehole, a biodigester and VIP latrines.
The new facility will be invaluable for people who usually have to walk long distances to seek medical attention. It will be used for maternity care, antenatal and post-natal, HIV and malaria, child vaccinations and for COVID-19 testing.
We have been overwhelmed by the support of our existing donors during these challenging times and thank everyone for their tremendous support.
