Fostering early Childhood Development

By Matthew Aubry | Executive Director

Over the past year ORG has seen The National Playdate develop as an  incredibly impactful and sustainable program for The Bahamas with high impact and low costs. The National Playdate serves to develop socioemotional skills and enhanced parenting  to the most vulnerable families, increasing opportunity  early childhood development through  play  and communication in children 0-5 years. This  fosters parent and child bonding and attachment — a relationship strengthening strategy which has implications on stronger more meaningful parental involvement across later academic years.

ORG saw advancements of the NPD plan, while adapting  to the socially restrictive conditions of the Pandemic,  with the production of a video promoting easy to use parenting skills  featuring  with the participation of four families. The video “The National Day of Play -- Talking about Emotions” was  supported through the distribution of “NPD at home”  activity kits to over 240 families in Bahamian Communities.

The kits, assembled by ORG volunteers,  contained materials which could be used by families  in conjunction with the videos, including masks to help children identify identities,  coloring and story based activities, and snacks and beverages for the families.

The Kits were delivered  across  New Providence, Grand Bahama and Eleuthera through community partnerships. And shown  on Youtube, Facebook video and Cable Channel 212. NPD Kits were delivered to  local community partners including :

  • Lend a Hand Community Center
  • Great Commission Food Distribution Center
  • Fox Hill Constituency office
  • Freetown Constituency office
  • Direct Distribution Burial Ground Corner
  • Bain and Grants Town Constituency Office
  • Harbour Island All-Age School
  •  Pandora Lucaya Freeport

The Organization for Responsible GOvernance is excited to seek  additional  resources to support the National Play Date program  and re launch  in person community based  programs  as Pandemic conditions improve. Additionally,  with funding ORG looks to produce 2-3  additional topical episodes which can improve alignment with National preschool learning outcomes to increase both usage and relevance to families as they start their children an successful  academic pathways. Also, Further development can help The Bahamas  to achieve and fill the gaps in national Early Childhood education goals which align with UN SDG goals.
