Cure poor kids with heart disease in rural China

As China California Heart Watch moves into it summer fundraising efforts, there is no better time to remind you all where your generous donations are going. For decades, rural Yunnan has struggled with high rates of heart disease due to indoor smoke inhalation from cooking fires, a high-sodium diet and a high rate of tobacco smoking. In addition, many children born with congenital heart disease often went undetected until it was too late. Dr. Bob Detrano came into Yunnan two decades ago and made it his goal to find these children through rural heart screening programs and through education of local farming communities and the clinicians that take care of the local people. His impact has helped change the medical culture in this part of the world as China continues to make new policies to protect the health of rural people. Some childre, however, still fall through the cracks and it is your generous contributions that help those less fortunate families who cannot afford life-saving heart sugeries for their children. China California has provided for many of these families to assure their children have a fair shot at a healthy future.
